Currently, we have open committee positions to add to our repertoire of capable and enthusiastic student journalists.
Sports Editor
A brilliant opportunity for anyone passionate about med school sport. The sports editor writes and commissions article and photos from a sporting fixture involving medical students for each issue. If you love sport and love writing, we’ll train you up in design, layout and editing skills.
Social Media Editor
Do you have 3,000 Facebook friends? Do you feel compelled to tweet every five minutes? Are you a PR deity? If this describes you, then look no further. The social media editor supports the monthly paper by posting regular updates throughout the month on online social networking sites. They will expand the readership of the paper and raise the online presence of our beloved publication.
Sub-editors
The sub-editors are essential to the editing process. Their job is to assist the section-editors by checking articles for factual and grammatical errors and ensuring that copy follows the house-style. They will usually pen one or two articles per month, and may assist with the layout process. This is a great opportunity to learn about writing and producing a paper, as well as developing creativity in design and layout. An eye for language and detail is essential.
Advertising officer
If you’re an expert in the art of persuasion and networking, then this is the position for you. The Medical Student newspaper is a free publication, but costs a small fortune to run. Advertising is our main way of keeping the pennies trickling in. You will work with the treasurer whilst using your skills of seduction on the end of the phone to sell two to three advertising spaces per month.
Distribution and Publicity Officer
What good is a newspaper if nobody knows about it? The distribution and publicity officer tackles with the real-world presence of the paper. They will ensure that all student unions, lecture theatres and mess rooms have copies of the latest issue in stock, as well as placing posters in suitable locations.
Writers
We encourage everyone to write for us, whether you landed your first scoop by pre-school, or you’ve never penned a headline in your life. You may be asked to write up your own idea, something the editor has suggested or that came up at the editorial meeting, or something for the news, features or culture sections. You may need to contact third parties, obtain quotes and do some research or digging around roving reporter-like, nose to the ground! The staff writers contribute a substantial amount of material to every issue. It’s a perfect job for a reliable person looking for a creative outlet for their ideas.
Photographers
Let’s face it; all words and no pictures make a paper a dull read. Often articles come without photos, so a photographer with MS can expect to be contacted sporadically asking for images of anything from hospitals to artichokes (no, really!). Sometimes you might be asked to cover an event. You can also take pictures as you see them and send them to the editor for inclusion in the paper’s image bank. All pics are credited and can be entered into the photography categories of various journalism awards at the end of the year. Remember MS also has a large photo on the front of each issue, which would be an excellent addition to any photographer’s portfolio!
Illustrators
Reckon you’re a bit of a whizzkid with graphics software? Then look no further for the perfect opportunity to show off your skills. The medical student includes numerous dazzling pages of articles each month crying out for illustration.
